Waitrose are great!

16 01 2008

It was my Mum’s birthday the other day (her 60th). My wife and I were in charge of ordering the cake, so we went to Waitrose and ordered said cake (which wasn’t cheap £40). The day before the birthday party we went to pick it up, passed the woman behind the info counter our order slip and waited while she went off to the cake counter to get it. As we were waiting I commented to “wife bet she drops it on the way back”.

The cake box arrived back 2 members of staff crowded around, the box lid was lifted, a smile went up on my face as a delicate flower decoration at the back of the cake was revealed and then the smile soon disappeared as the crushed front of the cake was revealed. The manageress was called over “Oh dear”. Anyway she sympathized and straight away said that we wouldn’t be charged for the cake (company policy as the cake should of been checked by them when it arrived at the store and then replaced if broken, which obviously it was not). The manger also got us a free bottle of champagne.

My rather long point is this, what excellent customer service from a company in this day and age. This is the kind of service we don’t expect as we are so use to being ripped off and treated with contempt by companies (First Great Western are you listening?). I would recommend Waitrose to anyone, yes they are more expensive than other supermarkets but politeness and great customer service are worth their weight in gold.
