This film has a very poetic quality which reminded me of the Sonic Youth album NYC Ghosts and Flowers. The film is almost documentary style in it’s look, however it does have a great visual quality which is very evident in its lighting.
The acting is great, and throughout the whole film you get the feeling of watching a story unfold before you like you were a fly on the wall. Jodie Foster plays a DJ who goes out in the city recording sounds and then doing a poetic monologue over the top, this add to the very laid back feel of the whole film which works really well in contrasting the extreme acts of violence. You really do feel the anguish and fear, but also the community and relaxed aspect of a big city.
I really liked this film and will be watching it a gain to see if it gets any better on a second viewing or to see if I missed anything first time around. The filming and acting was superb. Jodie Foster is brilliant! It just would not of worked without her in the main role. If you get a chance you must watch this film. It is typical vigilante fare but told with such style and panache it really is worth your time.
