Don’t usually like first person shooters, don’t usually like war games or strategy or tactical games or games with lots of confusing controls. So I don’t know why I decided to try this one, saw it in the shop read the back looked at those alluring screen shoots and suddenly I’d made up my mind. And what a jolly good decision it turned out to be, I’ll say up front I’m playing it on easy mode (I know I’m a weed) but I do like to play a game without repeating large sections and getting frustrated if at all possible. Now I‘m older I just don’t seem to have the patience required to play on the harder levels.
You play the leader of a small unit (3 plus you) called the Ghosts a sort of U.S version of the SAS. There are several missions which kind of run on from each other so it feels like one continuous campaign. You get briefed from a camera in your hud and occasionally get news feed of developing situations, which all adds to the atmosphere and on occasion I found myself getting really involved in the action. Using night vision goggles and a flying recon unit to spot and take out snipers on roof tops really does get exciting. And at one point in a grave yard I rounded a corner to spot about five enemies closing in on me and shouted something about how many there were much to my wives amusement.
The soldiers you get to take on each mission and the equipment is down to you and it does make a strategic difference, you do find yourself favouring certain types of combat and equipping up for that style. The scenery is great and extremely immersive the urban environments giving plenty of cover for you and your team, it’s amazing how natural controlling the team becomes and you’ll be sending them ahead and placing them in cover quite naturally after only a few missions. I’m really enjoying this game and can’t wait to finish it, I might even play it through again on a harder level. Yes it really is that good.
